Daniel Diehl is a realism artist who specializes in an obscure technique known as “fumage” which utilizes candle soot as a drawing medium. The residue from a burning candle or oil lamp is collected and transferred to the paper using a combination of application tools.
In 2012, Daniel’s art caught the eye of Ripley’s “Believe it or Not!” when three large-scale works were purchased from the ArtPrize competition in Michigan and put on display in their museums around America. Since then, he has continued to refine his technique and expand his talent, landing his creations in public and private collections around the world.
Influence for Daniel’s work can be found in the work of 1930’s artist Wolfgang Paalen who would pass his blank canvas through flames to collect soot and then use the obscure designs as a template for his abstract paintings. Daniel wants to show that great can still emerge from mediums outside the traditional worlds of painting and drawing.
